About Burrum Biodynamics
Stephen Walter and Tania Walter run the biodynamic farm Burrum in Marnoo West, in the Wimmera grain-growing region of North West Victoria.
Stephen is a fifth-generation farmer who has lived on the property his entire life. The farm was originally purchased by his father in the 1950s.
After marrying, Stephen and Tania expanded by buying neighbouring properties, growing the farm to 951 hectares.
They converted to biodynamic farming in 2000 after years of no-till farming that relied on chemicals.
The change quickly improved biological soil activity and helped them escape what they called the “chemical treadmill.”
They received Demeter “In-Conversion” status in 2005 and full biodynamic certification in 2008 from Demeter International.
The farm grows spelt, barley, oats, lentils, peas and faba beans, rotating legumes and grains to naturally build soil nitrogen. After floods damaged lentil crops in 2010, they invested in on-farm processing equipment.
Processing their own grains and legumes allows them to guarantee the produce is never treated with glyphosate, fumigants, or other chemicals.
