A banana gives a sustained and substantial boost of energy, which is why they are a favourite choice for active people looking for a quick, convenient and healthy boost. The riper a banana, the quicker it is digested and converted to muscle fuel. This can help to avoid the mid-afternoon slump often experienced at work, as naanies have a low GI for a fruit - even when they're pretty ripe.
Bananas are nature's own electrolyte, and are also a good source of soluble fibre (helps sort out digestive & fluid balance issues), resistant starch (low GI in less ripe naanies), vitamin C, B-group vitamins, folate, niacin, riboflavin and pantothenic acid.
Always great, as snacks, in smoothies, with ice-cream, or perhaps sliced on corn thins smeared with tahini or nut butter and honey (don't knock it til you try it).
These are the only produce items we regularly source from growers outside Victoria (from Qld). The reason is that people just love their naanies, and we simply can't find a commercial organic farmer locally, as they're really not suited to growing in this climate.
